Katong - Shophouses

Over here in Katong, there are many beautiful shophouses. They have very unique and beautiful designs on them. These shophouses are very old and some dated as far back as in 1920s.
This Red Building is very popular. It used to be a famous bakery shop.
The Red House Bakery is a wakaf property, put in trust to the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore by Sherrifa Zain Alsharoff Mohamed Alsogoff, the great granddaughter of Hajjah Fatimah who built the famous Hajjah Fatimah Mosque at Beach Road. A Jewish man named Jim Baker started the bakery shop. In 1931, a Hainanese seaman, Tan Siang Fuan paid S$600 as "coffee money" to take over the bakery shop from Jim Baker. In 1957, the shophouse where the Red House Bakery was occupying was declared a wakaf asset together with five other adjacent shophouses along East Coast Road. It was specified that the rental income from the shophouses were to be used to fund Sherrifa Zain's grandchildren's education until 21 years after her death. Beyond that, the earnings were to be used to establish and maintain a free clinic, to be named the Al-Taha Dispensary.
You can read more about its history from Infopedia .

Love these shophouses with their beautiful windows. I noted the above photo that one of the shop changed its windows. I do hope the rest will keep the original designs of the windows.

Most shophouses in Katong are used as restaurants or food outlets. Katong is famous for its food.

Serangoon Salted Baked Chicken

Saw this shop selling salt-baked chicken.

Oh I remember that we used to buy this from Serangoon and not Katong. I guess this is one of their branch shop.

The shop that started selling this salt baked chicken was in Serangoon and it was very famous. I remember tucking into the delicious chicken as a child together with my siblings. But now due to health conscious, am avoiding too much intake of salt.

Sembawang Shopping Centre-Playground for Kids

I normally dont go to Sembawang area cause it is not near where I am staying. This is the day where hubby and me decided to head to Sembawang Shopping Centre for our lunch.

We stumbled across a playground for kids. It looked so much fun.
The whole area looked deserted cause it is a weekday and all the kids are in school. And it is lunch time around noon, I guess parents do not like their kids to be out playing in the mid sun. But come weekend or school holidays, who cares if it is mid sun...lol. The whole place would be filled with kids and laughter.

Vivo City - Marche's Restaurant-Little Garden-Herbs

They too grow lots of herbs and spices plants. The above plant is curry leaf. Each time I wanted to cook curry chicken or fish, I would get some stalks from the vegetable seller free of charge. The best way to get free extras is to make friends with the vegetable seller. Hubby told me that, the next time you buy any vegetables from her, she just add the cost of the free extras to your purchases...arggggg.

This is ladyfinger or Okra plant but I did not spot any fruit in this plant.

Today is April Fool's day, did any one of you get any pranks played on you? I did play a prank on my hubby. Hubby said I am so childish...lol.
I remembered my late mom would always called me on April Fool's Day and every year she would play the same joke...lol.

She would just called and said she found a huge parcel that contained a lot of money in it and we would always replied her "April Fool's Day". We are so used to the same joke every year...hahahaha.
